Time Stood Still

One must have a mind of winter

To regard the frost and the boughs

Of the pine-trees crusted with snow;

And have been cold a long time

To behold the junipers shagged with ice,

The spruces rough in the distant glitter

Of the January sun; and not to think

Of any misery in the sound of the wind,

In the sound of a few leaves,

Which is the sound of the land

Full of the same wind

That is blowing in the same bare place

For the listener, who listens in the snow,

And, nothing himself, beholds

Nothing that is not there and the nothing that is.

  1. I really do get the sense that time is standing in stillness today. Very dreamy with the pop of colour against the white canvas. Beautiful Emalina.

    1. Thanks very much Sue! The snow brings that incredible quality of stillness doesn't it, I wanted to try to capture the surreality of it.

  6. Oh that coat is just the business! I adore snow, unfortuntaley it hasn't fallen here. I like that silent hush that comes with it, the sense of waiting. The cat makes me smile, lovely, one of mine is so funny when we have had snow, he jumps and dives through it in a sort of skidding run.

    1. You can have some of our snow if you like! It is magically beautiful, but getting to work on Monday is going to be challenging! Nico the cat is experiencing her first time in the snow, and she seems to think she's a dog as she adores it, loves getting wet and cold out there!

  8. Such beautiful images, the beautiful white landscape and you, a splash of dramatic red and vintage loveliness! What a gorgeous dress, love the hat and the fabulous tapestry coat. Two of my cats love the snow, they roll about in it and chase the flurries, while the other two hate it and shake their delicate laws in distaste! xxxx

    1. What a great review, thank you! Good to you have snow loving cats too, I thought I was crazy as every cat I've had before has hated the snow, but she just can't get enough of the stuff!

  9. Ah, could you send some of that snow over here? It makes such a gorgeous backdrop for that dress, and what an amazing coat! You look beautiful as always in this dramatic ensemble, and the cat sure looks like he's enjoying that wonderful snow!

  11. Oh how perfect - with time standing so still that you could have emerged from a snowy wood or fairy tale early last century. There's something about the second image particularly that makes me want to hold my breath. Your granny's hand made coat is especially beautiful and I'm enjoying the thought of her perhaps wearing it in snow too.

    1. I'm so pleased you enjoyed the images Roz, thank you! I was channelling a last century fairy tale come victorian christmas postcard vibe. The second image is one of my faves too... I think I look like a figurine atop a MASSIVE cake! I'm afraid Kiki would probably be a little appalled at me wearing her amazing coat out in the snow, I think it was more of a coat to wear to the ballet in Covent Garden or a special meal out, but I know she'd be thrilled to read how much you all love it.

  14. Ahh red in the snow! Again we seem to be on the same wavelength my dear! I am running out of superlatives to describe how wonderful you look in your photos and the treasures you've inherited from your grandmother! You look glorious in the snow wearing that red dress and tapestry coat - and believe it or not I've just come into possession of a winter tapestry coat myself. Thank you for sharing the beautiful imagery and poetry!

  28. 1940's princess coats tend to be my particular weakness, but that 1930's tapestry coat is completely amazing. Plus, I love how dramatic your outfit looks surrounded by all that snow. I have to admit that I've been dressing pretty lackluster lately thanks to the ridiculously cold temperatures here in Pennsylvania.

  29. What could be more perfect in the snow than red, just like the robin red-breast! It is utterly fabulous that you have access to your grandmother's creations, for they aren't just clothes and trinkets. They are richly woven with history and stories of family. And I just read through your previous post - what an extraordinary lady your Granny Kiki was. I can't believe she was immortalized as a little fairy.

It's interesting to think of people immortalized through art, poetry or even celluloid. My grandfather, as a very young man in the '20s or early '30s, was in the movies in Asia. (He did a lot of Shakespearean drama at university.) This was prior to his falling into a legal career. I believe the national film archives are trying to search for all these old films. My brother, who is an art/indie filmmaker, is working with them to restore whatever they discover. I hope they find them some day! - J xx

    1. Sorry not to respond before, I've only just seen this comment! Thanks so much, I'm so glad you enjoyed the post and have found Kiki's rich history intruiging. Your grandfather sounds like an amazing fellow. How wonderful would it be to find those films, I really hope you get to see him in the archives, fingers crossed! And maybe even share them with us someday!
