The Hammock

"Don't banter me," she said, wounded at what appeared to be his flippancy. He did not mind the entreaty, but the tone with its delicate note of pathos was like a reproach. He could not explain; he could not tell her that he had penetrated her mood and understood. He said nothing except to offer her his arm, for, by her own admission, she was exhausted. She had been walking alone with her arms hanging limp, letting her white skirts trail along the dewy path. She took his arm, but she did not lean upon it. She let her hand lie listlessly, as though her thoughts were elsewhere--somewhere in advance of her body, and she was striving to overtake them.
Robert assisted her into the hammock which swung from the post before her door out to the trunk of a tree.
"Will you stay out here and wait for Mr. Pontellier?" he asked.
"I'll stay out here. Good-night."
"Shall I get you a pillow?"
"There's one here," she said, feeling about, for they were in the shadow.
"It must be soiled; the children have been tumbling it about."
"No matter." And having discovered the pillow, she adjusted it beneath her head. She extended herself in the hammock with a deep breath of relief. She was not a supercilious or an over-dainty woman. She was not much given to reclining in the hammock, and when she did so it was with no cat-like suggestion of voluptuous ease, but with a beneficent repose which seemed to invade her whole body.

  1. Ahhh these photos remind me SO much of Picnic at Hanging Rock (one of the dreamiest, most beautiful films in my opinion), just gorgeous. I really hope some wonderfully talented artist comes across your blog one of these days and turns one of your photos into a painting, I would love to see these gorgeous photographs translated onto canvas.

Also, I am incredibly jealous that you have a hammock! Not only that, but you have such a lovely place to hang it in.

  6. The umbrella adds such romance and sweetness. These pictures are beautiful, which seems almost inadequate to describe this splendor.

  7. Gorgeous! That gypsy blouse is exquisite and you look particularly beautiful in that second photo! We've got a hammock somewhere but for the life of me I can't find it, it's been so long since we last had a summer worthy of using it. x

  8. You've reminded me of The Awakening, haven't read that in many years. Beautiful photos, such a romantic vibe. Gorgeous blouse and the parasol is delicious! I must be the only person in the world who finds hammocks very uncomfortable - lovely to look at, hell to get in and out of! xxxx

  9. Your posts makes me wish I had the patience to improve my English, "cat-like suggestion of voluptuous ease" does not exist in my vocabulary, but it sounds lovely and you are as taken from a timeless novel.

  11. There are few things on earth more serenely perfect to my mind than laying in a hammock. Time and time again I've mentioned to my husband how much I want one when we have a house with a yard of our own. Though of course, I can always take inspiration from you and these beautiful images, and turn a verdant patch of woodland into my own yard for a spell (a most appealing thought indeed!).

  12. How idyllic these scenes are of you in your hammock swinging above the bluebells in your gorgeous gypsy blouse, shaded by your lace parasol. The most perfect way to relax on a warm summer's day I imagine!

Thank you for your comment on Dross. Joey's dad is better and his mom is in hospice, surrounded by family and friends. We have much to be grateful for.

  20. You look lovely and very happy here! In contrast to the ending of *The Awakening*, but I'm happy to see your narrative working better for the heroine. I'm all for happy endings this week.

  25. How do you find such suitable prose for your photographs? No, don't tell me...I do prefer the mystery. It's funny, but I find that lying in a hammock gives me mild motion sickness...nothing bad, just enough to take away the pleasure. Ah well! You look lovely and serene, and I do see a bit of cat-like posing. Heavenly.
