To The End Of Winter

Spring Quiet

Gone were but the Winter,
Come were but the Spring,
I would go to a covert
Where the birds sing.

Where in the whitethom
Singeth a thrush,
And a robin sings
In the holly-bush.

Full of fresh scents
Are the budding boughs
Arching high over
A cool green house:

Full of sweet scents,
And whispering air

Which sayeth softly:
"We spread no snare;

"Here dwell in safety,
Here dwell alone,
With a clear stream
And a mossy stone.

Here the sun shineth
Most shadily;
Here is heard an echo
Of the far sea,
Though far off it be."

  6. Hear hear! You do suit a cloche hat and you look gorgeous in that berry coloured knit dress. I love how you have a hint of several eras altogether in your looks even when you are wearing modern pieces with your vintage, I felt the forties, thirties and twenties coming out here.

  7. Truly gorgeous photos, Emalina! Beautiful hat and cape, and that dress looks amazing on you, those colours really suit you too. What a lovely locket! I love sentimental things like that. You look a lot like your beautiful mum.

  8. I love all the sentimentality within this post. I bet Grandma Kiki just beams from heaven seeing you enjoy her garments:) That is so rare you are able to have even a pair of her shoes! Amazing! Lovely outfit and I really enjoyed seeing all the close ups and details. How sweet you even have your own touch of childhood in your ensemble. I loved little lockets as a girl and I had a few but who knows where they ended up:) I also love how you added the vintage BW inspired photographs to your post.

    1. Ah thank you Joanna! Yes it's quite unusual that we have the same size feet: 6.5 uk size, which I guess meant Kiki had quite large feet in her day!

  10. Yay, no snow, and flowers and sunshine! I love how all your pieces are passed down or made by your Granny. Every piece looks super special but there's just something about a heart locket that is extra special. And you look stunning in the red dress! Xo

  11. We're still waiting for it! I love the locket, it's nice to have, I have the one my granny was given for her 21st in 1927. That's a super frock, sort of thing I'd have to lose several inches off the hem to wear!

    1. I think I spoke too soon - only 1 day of spring before it all went wintry again, boo! How wonderful that you have your granny's locket from the 20s, family jewellery are such are special treasures to cherish aren't they.

  12. I love Christina Rossetti and I'm really enjoying your choices of poetry to accompany posts. What an incredibly special locket. You're lucky to have feet the same size as your Granny kiki's too. I have a box of my late great grandma's shoes that I can't quite bear to part with, even though they are a very teeny size 2! Love your Spring look for basking outdoors in early March sunshine - when it deigns to appear.

    1. So glad you're enjoying the poetry Roz! Yes I do feel so lucky to hold the heritage of my family in their cherished possessions. Wow you great grandma had such tiny feet! My granny had quite large feet for her time, 6.5, just the same as mine, I love to wear her shoes, thinking of where she will have walked in them.

  13. You are gorgeous in the sunshine in this beautiful ensemble. The beaded bird, locket, shoes, emerging buds, fur and shoes are the perfect accompaniments to that dramatic sweep of red dress topped by an excellent hat. Lovely to see green emerging.

  21. My heart is melting at the sight of the pics of you and your beautiful mama in the locket. I always wanted a locket when I was a child (and since) and was always disappointed if a lady's locket was empty. Now that I have one, I'm ashamed to say no one lives in it yet! :(. Must sort. The frock is utterly divine and oh my look at that GAWWWWWJUSSSSS fur cape **faints with desire**. My toes started twitching at the beautiful bag in the close up and oh my you are so lucky to fit Kiki's beautiful old shoes. I wonder if any of mine will last the distance as my 10yo is going to be able to fit my humungous UK size 8 shoes in about a year - eeeeeeeek! Are they camellias budding? One of my favourite flowers and so delicate. I love how they must be handled carefully or not handled at all as they bruise so easily - such a fitting spring bloom:) xoxoxoxoxo

  23. Oh, Christina Rosetti just sets off spring beautifully. As does your outfit (from granny's closet -- what a treasure). This past week, we've had spring blossoms all over. This morning, I saw a huge magnolia tree pink with flowers. It got me to pull on printed trousers with huge pink flowers on them!

Thanks so much for your thoughts and good wishes. The fog outside just lifted, as it is slowly inside.

  26. Lovely silhouette, colors and textures. I'm amazed that the shoes are truly vintage since it seems that most of us have much bigger feet now! I also love the glimpse of the large planters behind what I assume is your house. Somehow I think summer will be glorious there, too.
